On Choosing the Right Word

When Robert Louis Stevenson coined this catch phrase, he was talking about toy theatres. Sheets of characters and scenery were available at the two prices depending on their complexity. However, it’s an observation which can easily be applied to word choices in all our writing.

Julianne Johnson’s essay is something I agree with wholeheartedly. Any writer worth their salt should care about the words they use – I do – but when does an extensive vocabulary start to get in the way of our communication with our readers?
